In Johannesburg the streets are lined with posters of tabloid newspapers advertising their bloodthirsty headlines. The sensation-seeking headlines are particulary violent and illustrate the racial and social lines within South African society in dramatic slogans. For the series SMOKE AND MIRRORS these posters were made into clothing. The actors from After Gertrude Stein I pose against the background of Johannesburgs former inner city goldmines. SMOKE AND MIRRORS also relates to John Heartfield's photo montage from 1930 titled
Whoever Reads Bourgeois Newspapers Becomes Blind and Deaf. Away with the Stultifying Bandages!
